The secret chambers of the heart
Are not for public penetration
Yet the urge to spill our hidden blood
Is irresistible
Hence the blogging craze in which we
broadcast everything including
bathroom habits (I pee on the ground),
Nose-picking proclivities (yes, when no one is watching)
And lovelorn afflictions (no, he doesn’t love me enough).
Spilling our whine is good for the soul
And that is why confessionals are popular
Reading others’ purgatories
Makes us feel better about our own hell
So do tell: spill your guts
but watch for those hungry crows
Everything is privatized these days
Save the self

Re: publicizing the private: a confession
Mon, May 28, 2007 - 5:39 AMHmm. Another one of those "is it really a poem?" poems.
The title, "a confession," led me to expect I would be reading a poem that would be a confession itself, but instead I found a cultural critique of confession. That was a little disappointing, and I felt misled.
The last line is wonderful, but I wish the rest of the poem had been worded a little more cleverly. -

Re: publicizing the private: a confession
Tue, May 29, 2007 - 12:57 PMThe 'a confession' part is probably misleading... you are right. It was an obscure reference to the fact that I also engage in public confessionals via blogging. But I can see that it's not clear...
